09 Moose Hunt

Well its that time of year again so It was time for My self Shea and Gruber to head up to Big Sandy Lake for Our annual Moose hunt. For a change the weather was cool and the rut was just starting.

We got up there to find out that Richard and Collen were no longer running the resort and it was kind of sad not seeing Thelma the coon hound but the new manager was a very nice guy and we all hit it off right away.

So the second day we go out and start walking a trail along a river were I've seen moose before and I decide to stop and call. Gruber decides to stay with me and Shea kept walking down the trail. About 20 mins later me and Devon hear a gun shot. A few seconds later we hear another shot and then about 30 secs later a third shot. So I told Gruber Shea got a moose.

We head down to wards Shea and sure enough we had a moose. Shea said he walked into a clearing and seen some garbage on the ground when he heard a growling noise that he thought was a bear. We he looked up he sees a bull moose pawing the ground and raking willows facing him. So He lifts his gun and decides to go for a head shot. Well he missed the first shot and the Bull reared up and pawed the air and charged him. So he jammed another round into the gun and about 7 yards from him the bull turned ( from the sound of the bolt closing we think) and Shea put one in his neck dropping him at 10 yards. A third shot put him out. Five Hours later we had our moose hanging in the shed at the cabin.

2 nights later Gruber goes out and gives a bull call and a big bull comes out onto the trail covered with willows at about 40 yards looking for a fight but Gruber can't see anything but willows and antlers that he says were at least 55 inches wide. And the bull returns to the bush and disappears never to be seen again. So our 09 trip turned out a lot better than the 08 one.

Drawn for Elk in Zone 52

Well Got drawn for Elk in Zone 52. Who knew there were Elk right across the river from our house. So we set up camp on the 31st of August and on Sept. 1st 10 min into the season Devon shot a nice 4X4 bull that we called out. Two days later I went back to the same spot and walk up on 3 cows. I shot one and knocked her down twice but she made it into the bush and we never found her. How maddening. 2o days later I get my self into a place were a bull was bugling and see 2 different cows but nether gave me a shot man there hard to see in the bush. Oh well So my season ended with no elk but it was fun.
